About Us

Eta Chi Chapter

Chartered in 1991, the Eta Chi chapter of Delta Sigma Phi became part of a growing and thriving greek community at New Mexico State University. In its youth as a chapter, Eta Chi was known for its outstanding brotherhood, large pledge classes, dedication to service to others and its lively social life.

In recent years, the brotherhood of the Eta Chi chapter dwindled significantly, recruitment numbers dropped and priorities for the fraternity shifted. As a result, the Eta Chi chapter was closed in 2010. However, the recolonization of the Eta Chi chapter took place in the fall of 2014. Eighteen outstanding gentlemen became the founding fathers of what has become the present Eta Chi chapter.

The Eta Chi chapter has thrived since its recolonization receiving awards recognizing the highest GPA among fraternities on campus, as well as the most improved chapter in the spring of 2015. Becoming a member of the Eta Chi Chapter of Delta Sigma Phi means that you will be a part of a new and thriving brotherhood of men commited to bettering ourselves, our university, and our community.

National History

At the end of the nineteenth century, most fraternities were exclusively Christian or Jewish, and barred membership to individuals on the basis of religion. When a group of friends at the City College of New York tried to join a fraternity, they were denied membership because their group was composed of Christians and Jews. In response, they organized the first chapter of Delta Sigma Phi on December 10, 1899. The chapter was called Insula due to the chapter's location in Manhattan. In late 1902, with five members from Insula signing incorporation papers, Delta Sigma Phi was incorporated with the purpose to spread "the principles of friendship and brotherhood among college men, without respect to race or creed."
